Does Algebra 2 include Trigonometry?

Does anyone know? If so, I would love for some direction.

I just realized I think I am supposed to cover trigonometry with my Algebra 2 students. If so, then I need to change the entire structure of Algebra 2 for the year. This is trouble with a capital T.

My concern is partially driven by the fact that I abhor poor education. Thanks mostly to my parents. (Thanks Mom and Dad!!). I can’t stand boring classes and teachers who do not know what they are talking about. I really do not like when homeschooling becomes an excuse for laziness. Not that it has to be. One of the most intelligent and educated people I knew in college was homeschooled. Of course his parents were lawyers. I am sure the genetics helped out in that situation.

I want to seriously teach these students math and I want them to truly learn. I simply refuse to bow down to poor curriculum in the name of ‘homeschooling’ or whatever.

Okay, I need to figure out Algebra 2. Classes start Monday. (I am not going to panic)

  • Nooo….you don’t have to do trig….=D. I know it’s in the book, but we can just…skip that section…or something

Actually, I don’t really know. My suggestion would be to just ask. I know there was an “advanced math” on the list of classes, but they cancelled it because there weren’t enough students. Point being, alg 2 isn’t the highest math TDA is planning on offering.

So I would ask before I re-plan everything, if I were you.

  • We had College Algebra (rather than Algebra 2) at my high school. Near the end of the year, we had an introduction to Trig…but Trigonometry had its own separate class.

    Good luck!

Jess – to reassure you :) We are not going through the entire book this year. Chapters of it are definitely more of an ‘advanced math’. Okay, so you can breathe a sigh of relief… ;-)

Apparently Trig is a conundrum. I have spoken with several people and am in the midst of investigating Missouri’s education standards. No one knows really where to stick Trig, sometimes it is a separate class, sometimes it is bypassed altogether – although basic Trigonometry is essential for a high school education. Well, hopefully we can get this figured out for next semester. :-) In the mean time, I am sticking with my original game plan.
